Embracing the Future

In the early 1900’s, during the first World War there was a ground swell of “Colored” Negroes filled with despair.

By the direction of God, the founders of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church chose to head for the promise of a better life in the North, along with an estimated 500,000 other Negroes. The great migration from the South to the North was on!

One of the 500,000 Negroes that migrated from the South was E. A. Bentley. Records are sketchy, but it is believed that Mr. Bentley was a Deacon at a church in Alabama.

By the Grace of God, he ended up in Cincinnati, OH and this is where our story begins…

God gave Deacon Bentley the idea for a church. He had the ability to motivate ten believers in Jesus Christ followed the direction of the Holy Spirit.  On August 13, 1919, they met in the home of Mr. William Smith.

Those present were: Dea. E. A. Bentley, Bro. Allen White, Dea. Willie Colvard, Bro. Willie Wright, Bro. Charles Bentley, Bro. J.C. Colvard, Dea. William Smith, Dea. Crawford, Bro. Charles Redmon, Rev. Kelly (Pastor Elect).

Rev. Kelly is believed to have been recruited from another local church. He remained the Pastor of New Prospect for a few years. Within a few weeks of the birth of New Prospect, 4 women were united with the church.  They were: Mrs. Lela Magruder, Mrs. Mattie Wood, Mrs. Elizabeth Howard, Mrs. Marie Burden.

New Prospect Baptist Church Celebrates over 100 Years of Service To The Community

We seek to be the “Village Well”.  The One place in the community that is essential to all life.  Over the past 100 years we have been Blessed to do great works for the city of Cincinnati.

New Prospect has created an oasis in the middle of the city by taking an abandoned site with 21 acres of land in Roselawn and creating a church and community center available for people from all walks of life to engage with one another.  We have the opportunity to provide a location that will serve the community with programming that will enhance their lives.
